What documents do I need to apply to CGFNS?

This will typically be documents confirming your identity, education and training, registration and language capability.

I do not have two years’ post registration experience. Can I still apply?

If you haven’t worked as a nurse for at least two of the last five years, you will still be able to apply to the CGFNS Credentials Verification Service. However, the decision made by the Nursing Council may be affected, and your application could be declined. 

Why do I need to complete the CGFNS credentials verification process?
CGFNS International Inc specialises in verifying and authenticating documents. That will be required for your application.
What are the application fees for CGFNS and the Nursing Council?

How long will it take to process my application to CGFNS and the Nursing Council?

Credentials verification will take approximately 30 days once all required documentation has been received by CGFNS. The Nursing Council assessment and registration process is then expected to take up to 65 days once you have responded to their invitation to apply.

Do I need to complete the CGFNS Qualifying Exam?
No. You don’t have to do the qualifying exam.
What is the accepted English Test requirement in New Zealand?

Occupational English Test (OET) and International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic are both approved English language tests for the Nursing Council.

What is the OET score required for New Zealand?

For OET you must achieve a minimum score of 350 for reading, listening, and speaking; and a minimum score of 300 for writing.

What is the IELTS score required for New Zealand?
For IELTS Academic you must achieve a minimum score of 7 for reading, listening, and speaking; and a minimum score of 6.5 for writing.
Can you re-sit English language tests?

You can achieve the minimum score in the English language tests over more than one sitting; however, the required score must be met within 12 months of first sitting the test and met within three years of your CGFNS report being transmitted to Nursing Council.

Please note that the Nursing Council of New Zealand does not currently accept online computer-based tests. However, computer-based tests administered in an approved testing centre are accepted (this includes the OET on computer at venue with the speaking sub-test that is hosted online).

How do I apply for registration?

Do I need to submit my documents to Nursing Council?

No. CGFNS will send all the documents you have provided directly to the Nursing Council.

Do I need to complete a criminal record check?

Yes, there will be multiple places that you will be required to authorise a criminal check, including the Nursing Council. You will be advised when this is required.

If I need to, can I withdraw my application?

You can withdraw your application at any stage. However, all fees you have paid are non-refundable.

Do I need to organise my own CAP?

Yes, when you receive the list of CAP educators after your application for registration, Filcare can help you choose a provider near where you wish to locate.

Does I have to organise the visa and travel documents?

Yes, it is an immigration entry requirement to have a visa. Please refer to our Process page for more information. 

What visa should I apply for when registering as a nurse?

There are different types of Visa categories to apply under, however Nurses can apply for an Occupational Registration Visitor Visa. Please refer to our Process page for all the information you need.
